Arviat, home to approximately 2,056, is located on the western shore of Hudson Bay in Nunavut’s Kivalliq Region. Arviat is a significant governmnent services centre.
Shallow lakes are scattered around the community with low sandy marshes, muskeg and long tidal flats. In the summer, the area attracts thousands of migrating birds and is home to the McConnell River Bird Sanctuary. Fishing, boating, snowmobiling and dog team travel are popular local activities.
