The new Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqaluit was officially opened in October 2007.
Nurse compensation is detailed in the provisions of the Collective Agreement between the Government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Employees Union. The current contract was ratified in July 2008.

Professional Development Initiative:
$3,000 to $6,330 annually per nurse depending on the home community, towards the cost of attending conferences, taking courses, etc.

Nurses employed by the GN on or before June 17,2008 and who did not receive signing or Temporary Labour Market Supplement payments, are entitled to either Longevity Bonus I or Longevity Bonus II.
Longevity Bonus I (for those employed between January 1, 2006 and June 17, 2008) provides for $5,000 on signing, $5,000 at 18 months and $10,000 at 30 months.
Longevity Bonus II (for those employed before January 1, 2006) provides $10,000 at 30 months and $10,000 at 36 months.
