Qikiqtani General Hospital (Iqaluit).

Health Facilities

There are health centres in 25 communities across Nunavut, including new regional facilities in Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay (with in/out patient capacity) and one regional hospital in Iqaluit. The primary health care providers are family physicians, nurse practitioners, community health nurses, and pharmacists.

Qikiqtani General Hospital (Iqaluit)

  • The Qikiqtani General Hospital, a joint venture between the Government of Nunavut and the project developer Qikiqtaaluk Corporation was officially opened in October 2007.
  • The total cost of the project was approximately $64 million.
  • New positions have been created to operate the expanded hospital. This means an increase in the number of nurses, medical radiation technologists, clerk interpreters and housekeeping staff.
  • The Qikiqtani General Hospital in-patient unit has 35 beds with 20 adult and pediatric beds currently available.
  • In the new hospital the number of Birthing Rooms has increased from two rooms to four. The number of Day Surgery beds has increased from four beds to six.
  • The new hospital houses Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory facilities and a new Emergency Room, Operating Room and facilities for Day Surgery. Medical Records will also be in the new hospital.
  • The former Baffin Regional Hospital, adjacent to the new hospital, houses dietetics, a pharmacy, out-patients department, support services and physicians’/specialists’ clinics.
